Laker TRF | Applications for the Fission and Fusion Nuclear Power Industries

Tritium removal and reduction technology in action

Laker TRF’s super-hydrophilic stainless-steel packing is currently in use in nuclear power plant air scrubber columns, capturing over 80% of the tritium previously released to the environment. All other components including Khun-style columns, heat pumps, bubble pumps and micro cryo-distillation (CD) or thermal diffusion (TD) backends are well-established technologies with decades of safe operation.

Candu® applications

Operating Plants

  • Simultaneous detritiation of PHT and Moderator heavy water

  • Optional upgrader column at front-end

  • Revenue from sale of Immobilized Tritium and/or Helium-3

  • Revenue from sale of medical isotopes (H217O and H218O)

  • Detritiation of ground water

  • Air scrubber columns to reduce airborne emissions

Decommissioning

  • Detritiation and upgrading of all station heavy water to virgin quality, converting a liability into an asset value of USD300M+ for one Candu 6

  • Detritiation of all tritiated light water including spent fuel bay water

Fusion Power Applications (ITER, UKAEA)

  • Air Detritiation Systems (ADS)

  • Water Detritiation Systems (WDS)

Other Applications

  • ADS and WDS for Neutron Source research facilities including the European Spallation Source (ESS Project)

  • Packing for Oxygen-18 production facilities

Case study: Fukushima-Daiichi

The Fukushima-Daiichi site is treating stored contaminated cooling water resulting from contact with the 2011 damaged reactors and debris through its Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS). This reduces all radionuclides to internationally recognized safe levels, except for tritium.

Laker TRF’s AWD system can reduce the tritium concentration to the natural level that occurs in rainwater, enabling the safe release of the water into the ocean. Learn more
